Swords Against the Senate: The Rise of the Roman Army and the Fall of the Republic by Erik Hildinger,
Personal intrigue, treachery, and occasional moral virtue vie in ancient Rome--undisputed ruler of the world, but fatally unable to control its own citizens or army In the first century B.C., Rome was the ruler of a vast empire. Yet at the heart of the Republic was a fatal flaw: a dangerous hostility between the aristocracy and the plebians, each regarding itself as the foundation of Rome's military power. Turning from their foreign enemies, Romans would soon be fighting Romans. Swords Against the Senate describes the first three decades of Rome's century-long civil war that transformed it from a republic to an imperial autocracy, from the Rome of citizen leaders to the Rome of decadent emperor thugs. As the republic came apart amid turmoil, Gaius Marius, the "people's general, " rose to despotic power only to be replaced by the brutal dictator Sulla. The Roman army, once invincible against foreign antagonists, became a tool for the powerful, and the Roman Senate its foe.

Rome the Greek World, and the East: Volume 1: The Roman Republic and the Augustan Revolution by Fergus Millar,
Fergus Millar is one of the most influential contemporary historians of the ancient world. His essays and books, including "The Emperor in the Roman World and "The Roman Near East, have enriched our understanding of the Greco-Roman world in fundamental ways. In his writings Millar has made the inhabitants of the Roman Empire central to our conception of how the empire functioned. He also has shown how and why Rabbinic Judaism, Christianity, and Islam evolved from within the wider cultural context of the Greco-Roman world. Opening this collection of sixteen essays is a new contribution by Millar in which he defends the continuing significance of the study of Classics and argues for expanding the definition of what constitutes that field. In this volume he also questions the dominant scholarly interpretation of politics in the Roman Republic, arguing that the Roman people, not the Senate, were the sovereign power in Republican Rome. In so doing he sheds new light on the establishment of a new regime by the first Roman emperor, Caesar Augustus.

Roman Senate - The Roman Senate (Latin, Senatus) was a deliberative body which was important in the government of both the Roman Republic and the Roman Empire. The word Senatus is derived from the Latin word senex ("old man" or "elder"); literally, "Senate" is understood to mean something along the lines of Council of Elders.

Senatorial Roman province - A senatorial province was a Roman province where the Roman Senate had the right to appoint governors. These provinces were away from the Empire's borders and free from the likelihood of rebellion, and so had few if any legions stationed in them (thus lessening the chance the Senate might try to seize power from the Emperor).

The Roman Revolution - The Roman Revolution is a book by Ronald Syme recounting the final years of the ancient Roman Republic and the creation of the Roman Empire by Caesar Augustus. Published by Oxford University Press in the summer of the momentous year of 1939, it was immediately controversial; its main conclusion was that the structure of the Republic and its Senate were inadequate to the needs of Roman rule, and that Augustus was merely doing what was necessary to restore order in public ...

Byzantine Senate - The Byzantine Senate was a nominal continuation of the Roman Senate, established in the 4th century by Constantine I. It survived for centuries but was increasingly irrelevant until its eventual disappearance in the 13th century.
